LAYOFF UPDATE #3

March 12, 2009 

The Tuesday night Board meeting on March 10^th was a great success.  Approximately 280 classified employees came.  THANKS TO ALL who cared enough about classified positions to come and let the district know we count and matter!  

But it was only the beginning!  We need to keep the pressure on them.  We need to CONTINUE showing strength with more and more classified employees joining us OR we’ll be viewed as weak.  What would be extraordinary is a showing of ALL classifed employees united in support. 

During negotiations, on Tuesday, March 10 & Thursday, March 12, we were given the same “Dog & Pony Show” as always on the budget information only with new numbers and a new term “sweeping”.  We call it baloney and hiding the bucks.  The district has a definite agenda and it seems to not include classified. 

We demanded the district BEGIN negotiating in earnest.  The district asked us to come back with the “concessions” we would be willing to put on the table. 

WHAT?  They have the monies PLUS extra: 

• Travel/Conferences (Code 5200)   $      356,162

A Conference is more important than you?

• Dues & Membership (Code 5300)             87,922

Membership in a club is more important than

Protecting our kids?

• Prof/Consulting (Code 5800)   $    4,456,622

Consultants (many are retired administrators)

Are more important than Education?

• UNAPPROPRIATED AMT (Code 9790)  $  30,060,737

Rob, steal”.  Isn’t that a better definition for this account?

While they are stalling they are moving forward with their agenda.  They want to advertise some new positions for the one stop welcome center and centralized accounting.  NO!  Those positions should FIRST be offered to the present classified employees that are being laid off.  NOT ADVERTISED.
